During the weekend of October 9 & 10, EWTN hosted their annual Family Celebration in Mother Angelica’s hometown of Canton, Ohio, which is also where she entered the order of the Poor Clares of Perpetual Adoration.
This special occasion attracted at least 3,000 attendees to come and meet EWTN personalities and friars, listen to talks by various show hosts and special guests, and participate in the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass. Many employees of the network and several friars were involved in setting up and assisting with the celebration.
During the celebration, the mayor of Canton announced a special honor that was being bestowed on Mother Angelica. A section of Market Avenue was being renamed “Mother Angelica Way”. The Mother Angelica Memorial Corridor will include the section of road that runs in front of Sancta Clara Monastery, where Mother made her first vows and lived out her first years as a nun. The street signs include a photo of Mother and the quote for which she is most famous: “Unless we are willing to do the ridiculous, God will not do the miraculous.”
Our friars assisted with serving and preparing for the liturgical celebrations, ushering penitents into the confessionals, and with many other needs. Our friar-priests concelebrated at the Masses, heard confessions, celebrated benediction services, and co-hosted the Family Talk.
Br. Leo hosted numerous children in the EWTN Faith Factory and gave them fun lessons on the faith using experiments that have been seen on his television show. The friars were available to meet with the attendees and encountered people from all over the country and even in Canada.
The celebration was a wonderful opportunity to bring EWTN to the people, especially those who are not able to visit the network. Through the celebration, we can see how the network has touched and helped so many lives thanks to God working through his faithful servant Mother Angelica.
